History of Fairfax

King Charles deeded 5,000,000 acres of the then-colony of Virginia to Lord Thomas Fairfax, which includes the area where Fairfax sits today. The city was first settled in the early 1700s by farmers from the Tidewater region of Virginia. In 1805, Virginia established the town of Providence. In 1859, it was officially renamed the Town of Fairfax. The Battle of Fairfax Court House occurred on June 1, 1861, and was the first battle on land in the Civil War. A second battle occurred on June 27, 1863.

Incorporated as a town in 1874, Fairfax officially became a city in 1961. The City of Fairfax serves as the county seat of Fairfax County.

Fairfax is located in Northern Virginia, roughly 15 miles from Washington, D.C. The city is accessible via Interstate 66 and U.S. Highway 29. The nearest major airport is Dulles International Airport. Fairfax has multiple mass transit options. The Washington Metro’s Orange Line is accessible via Vienna Station on the northeast outskirts of the city. Both the CUE Bus and Metrobus operate within Fairfax. George Mason University is also located in the city.
